An independent Muslim preacher was accused of assaulting a woman and threatening to kill her at a magistrates' court in Kangar, Perlis.

The 38-year-old Zamri Vinoth Kalimuthu, however, demanded a trial after the magistrate Siti Norhasliza Ali read the allegations.

According to the first charge, Zamri, the CEO of One Centre Malaysia Perlis, intentionally harmed the 38-year-old woman on July 14 at a residence in Taman Melati Indah.

If found guilty, he faces a maximum sentence of one year in prison, a fine of up to RM2,000, or both.

In connection with the second accusation, Zamri was charged with threatening to kill the same woman on the same day, July 14.

Zamri faces a maximum sentence of seven years in prison, a fine, or both if found guilty.
